Take Care of Your Heart This Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day this week, shouldn’t we think about our own hearts as well as those we love? The American Heart Association has a number of ways you can help out. But how about making your voice heard by sending a letter to your Members of Congress?

The American Heart Association makes it easy for you! By putting in your information, they figure out who your representatives are, let you add in your own story if you wish and send it directly to your Members of Congress.

Both of my grandmothers had heart disease. One had macular degeneration and suffered for years with the disease. My other grandmother was never sick a day in her life until she had horrible nausea (a now-known sign of a heart attack for women) and later passed away at the hospital.

Heart Statistics according to The American Heart Association:

  • More than one in three female adults has some form of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
  • Since 1984, the number of CVD deaths for females has exceeded those for males.
  • About 7.5 million females alive today have Coronary Heart Disease.
  • For a full list of statistics about women and heart disease, visit the organization’s fact sheet.

So please virtually introducing yourself to your Members of Congress! This easy action will let them know they have constituents watching their actions on issues that can impact cardiovascular health in the U.S.
