Farm Sensory Play: Find Your Way to the Farm

We love sensory play, especially my 5 year old daughter who was diagnosed with Sensory Processing Disorder.

Sensory play helps her regulate herself and provides sensory stimulation she so often craves.

This low prep activity was set up in 5 minutes.

I used a soup lentil & barley mix as the sensory bin filler, together with masking tape for the “road” and some farm toys.

I added the masking tape in short strips to form a road.

Then wrote start and finish to the ends.

The start sign is deliberately on the left, when you sit facing this way, because this is a pre-writing activity in disguise too!

Then we added the filler and tried to find the road again, first using our writing hand’s pointer finger.

Then using the tractor and playing the tractor needs to find its way to the wind pump:

My daughter old arranged the farm animals: all of them in a row(another typical thing for SPD children to do), “eating” their food.

We talked about the different animals and what they eat.

Thus making language development and vocabulary part of this activity in a playful way.

My 2.5 year old son added the farm workers to find their way too!

Having to find the way, gives this activity a sense of excitement.

The sensory material adds sensory stimulation.

The farm toys add a playful side to it.

The kids loved it and was engaged in play for a while.

This activity is open ended, and provides lots of learning opportunity without having to force learning.

A definite win in my (play) book!

    1. Perfect timing them on my part. The surprise maze really changes the game for the kiddos. 🙂

  3. You’ve made a very cute sensory bin. I love how the tractor has a “path” to plow on the farm. What a great way to encourage play in children.
