Get Moving! Change How You Think About Exercise

Some people just live to work out. Sometimes I think they’re coming from a different planet.

Others think of exercise like it’s a four letter word.

They hate the thought of it, hate the thought of even trying it, much less doing it.

Does that sound like you? (I see you nodding your head.)

But we just can’t ignore how good exercise is for our overall energy, sleep, health and weight.

This summer I kicked off a campaign for myself to shake away the negative thoughts of exercise and get myself back in shape!

See if any of the following match your thoughts and then follow my suggestions to change how you think about exercise.

I don’t like being sore.

In the beginning, some soreness is expected, but it can be reduced by going about the right way. Instead of jumping in to an exercise routine like you’re on fire, take the time to gradually build up your endurance.

Start slow and don’t over do it. If you haven’t exercised in awhile, you can’t expect to jump in and be at the same level as long time exercisers.

Also, remember that some people start enjoying a little bit of soreness.

They know they’ve pushed their body, just a little past their comfort zone and expect to feel sore for a day or two.

However, you don’t want to feel pain or major soreness.

If you feel either of those then you are trying to do too much.

I don’t have time.

This is a valid reason, but the truth is most people don’t have time.

What they do have is the same 24 hours in a day as you do and they make the time to take care of themselves.

This is my toughest obstacle to overcome!

Make exercise and taking care of yourself a priority.

Cut out some TV time if you have to.

Get up an hour earlier.

Your body and your health will thank you for it.

A good friend of mine exercises on their treadmill when her favorite soap opera is on. If she’s not on the treadmill, she doesn’t get to watch her show!

Exercise is boring.

Most people will agree that it can be.

Even people who go to the gym each day go through periods of boredom.

They do it for their health, not to have the time of their life.

You can make it more fun though.

Do activities that you enjoy and mix them up on a regular basis.

If you walked for 30 minutes yesterday, why not ride your bike for half an hour today?

If the weather doesn’t allow you to get outside for your workout, pop in a fitness DVD and workout in your living room.

Get some videos on the latest new dance moves.

For me, I did yoga for a couple of years before I fell off the bandwagon.

Right now, I’m doing a specialized class that is half cardio/half weights, and I’m really enjoying the new challenge!

I don’t want people to see me in my workout outfit.

I can’t tell you how many women have told me they don’t want to go to a gym because they feel like people will be staring at them… and they’re embarrassed.

There’s nothing worse than not feeling good in your workout clothes.

Buying the right kind that is fun and gets you excited will help motivate you!
